Session 2 of the Dementia in LD/ID Flexible course allow students to feedback and reflect on the knowledge they gained in Session 1 and how they have applied it in the home or workplace. This allows theory and concepts to meet the real world and allows learners to grow and learn as practitioners. What this course delivers Learners will: - Learn to use the entire BASELINE System (inc. the Checklists & Flowchart), to spot early signs of dementia, reduce risks of diagnostic overshadowing, and escalate where appropriate - Understand how dementia presents differently in people with learning disabilities, including earlier onset and atypical symptoms - Recognise the overlap between cognitive impairment, communication barriers, and distressed behaviours - Interpret behaviour as communication and respond in ways that reduce fear, frustration, and sensory overload - Learn to use the BASELINE System (inc. the Advanced Differential Checklist), to spot early signs of dementia and reduce risks of diagnostic overshadowing - Strengthen emotional intelligence and reflective practice when navigating complex behavioural and cognitive needs - Build resilience and confidence when supporting individuals who may struggle to express pain, discomfort, or unmet needs - Connect with those they care for in a way that nurtures well-being. - Be proactive in reducing the incidence of distressed behaviour - Be confident, assertive and compassionate with people experiencing distress - Role-model person-centred care through person-centred leadership - Make changes to the care environment and practices that will reduce distress and enhance comfort. Why this matters People with learning disabilities are at significantly higher risk of developing dementia — often earlier, often with more rapid changes, and often with communication challenges that mask distress.
