The BASELINE Flowchart

Recognise change earlier. Avoid diagnostic overshadowing. Improve outcomes.

Early signs of dementia in people with learning disabilities and intellectual and developmental disabilities (LD/IDD) are often missed because they can look very different from the "typical" dementia picture. Changes in behaviour, communication, routines, confidence or physical health can easily be mistaken for part of the person's existing disability rather than recognised as something new.

The BASELINE Flowchart was created to help carers, families and professionals move beyond assumptions. It offers a clear, practical pathway for identifying meaningful changes, ruling out reversible causes and recognising patterns that may need further assessment.

Early detection matters. The sooner changes are recognised, the sooner support, intervention and planning can begin.

Want to learn how to use the framework in practice and build confidence in recognising dementia in LD/IDD? Our Dementia in LD/IDD course takes you beyond the flowchart and gives you the knowledge and skills to make a real difference.
